My Vision for the Renovation
Every renovation begins with a clear vision. We wanted a space that balanced practicality with personality. The goal was to transform the downstairs toilet into an inviting environment full of character. My plan included enhancing the flooring, wall tiles, sink, removing the archway, and integrating a toilet cistern to achieve a cohesive look. I also recognised a need for improved storage, which had to be addressed.

Ripping Out the Old
The first step in the WC renovation involved removing the old fixtures. We started with the worn laminate flooring. Next, we tackled the dated wall tiles, followed by the sink and toilet. Witnessing those old features vanish was great. It fueled our excitement for the renovation.
Choosing the Right Materials: A Blend of Modern and Traditional
With the design in mind, I selected materials that would blend modern comfort with timeless elegance.
Flooring
We decided on engineered blonde oak for the flooring from Luxury Flooring. This choice not only brought warmth to the space but also increased brightness. The lovely grain pattern of the blonde oak added natural beauty, making it a perfect fit. According to sources, engineered wood can improve a home's value by around 70% to 80% of the money spent on it, reinforcing our decision.
Wall Tiles
Instead of traditional tiles, we opted for shiplap wood panelling. This classic choice provides warmth and texture while keeping a fresh, modern look. It serves as an elegant backdrop for the new fixtures, grounding the space.
Paint Colors
Choosing the right paint colours was crucial. We selected Lick paints in Taupe and Antique White. Taupe added sophistication, while Antique White helped reflect light. In fact, light colours can make a small room appear 20% larger. This combination transformed the atmosphere, making the room feel more open and relaxed.
New Fixtures: Sink and Toilet
Replacing the sink was a highlight of the renovation. We chose a stunning sink with a gold frame, beautifully balancing modern and traditional styles. Its shape and smooth finish added a striking focal point to the space.
We also replaced the toilet with an integrated cistern model and built-in cupboards for storage. This sleek design maximised space and eliminated bulky fittings. Not only did this enhance the room's visual appeal, but it also improved its functionality.
Enhancing the Ambiance
After addressing the larger elements, we focused on the finishing touches to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.
Lighting
We installed two stylish wall lights. They not only provided ample illumination but also complemented the traditional vibe. The soft glow created an inviting ambiance, making the room feel welcoming.
Mirror
To amplify the sense of space, we added a circular wall mirror. Its sleek design brought a modern touch while reflecting light. Ultimately, it made the room feel larger and brighter.
Window Dressing
For the window, we chose lightweight curtains that filtered natural light while maintaining privacy. The delicate fabric added a cosy touch, tying together the room's design seamlessly.
Radiator Replacement
The final touch was replacing the white radiator with a beautiful antique brass radiator.

The Result: Downstairs Toilet Transformation
The transformation of the downstairs WC was stunning. What was once a dull and dreary space has become a dreamy retreat. The harmonious blend of modern and traditional elements created a unique charm that makes the WC an enjoyable part of the home.
